In a first, basketball tournament held for government schools under YUG program | Chandigarh News


In a first such initiative, the final match of basketball tournament for students from government schools was held at Guru Nanak Stadium, Ludhiana, Thursday, under the Youth in Urban Governance (YUG) programme with the support of Ludhiana Cares Ladies Society.

Ludhiana deputy commissioner Surabhi Malik said it was a first of its kind initiative to engage the students of government schools in sports for their overall personality development. She said the state government was making all-out efforts to promote sports amongst the Punjabi youth. This was the need of the hour to engage the youth in sports which could help them to excel in their lives, Malik added.

Malik said that government school students would be trained by certified coaches under supervision of veteran basketball player Teja Singh Dhaliwal. She further said that Ludhiana Cares Ladies Society (Regd) was already providing free coaching to government school students at Chattar Singh Park, Model Town by setting up a basketball court and getting certified men and women coaches for these students.

She also informed that 47 students underwent two-month coaching at summer camp under YUG. Today, the final match was played between Government Senior Secondary Multipurpose School and Government Senior Secondary Smart School, Model Town. The trophy was awarded to Government Senior Secondary Multipurpose School.

She said that free coaching for all government school students will be continued at Chattar Singh Park where there are both men and women coaches. She said that Dhaliwal was the main motivator and patron in setting up this coaching centre. It is only with his continued support and guidance that the district administration is being able to run this basketball training facility for government school children.
