Almost a day after a five-year-old girl was abducted from her rented house in Aluva near Kochi, investigators on Saturday found her body in a garbage yard. A migrant worker from Assam has been taken into custody for allegedly abducting the girl when her parents were away for work, officers said.
Ernakulam Rural police identified the victim as Chandini, daughter of Ramdhar Tiwari, a native of Bishambharpur in Bihar’s Pashchim Champaran district. She was a student of Class 1 at a local school. Tiwari and his wife have three other children.
The migrant worker taken into custody has been identified as Asfak Alam, who stayed near the family.
Superintendent of Police (Ernakulam Rural) Vivek Kumar said the girl was found missing from her house at 3 pm on Friday. “Her parents came to know that she was missing when they returned after work. At 7 pm, we got a complaint and around 8 pm we registered the FIR. CCTV footage showed a person moving along with the missing girl. Later in the night, we tracked down Alam. We could not get any details from him at the time as he was in an inebriated condition. On Saturday, he confessed to the crime,” he said.
The SP added that the body was recovered from the garbage in the market. “The motive behind the crime is under investigation,” he said.
