PlayStation 5 sale knocks £75 / €75 off the console’s price in Europe

Sony Interactive Entertainment has launched a PlayStation 5 hardware sale in Europe.

In the console’s biggest official discount since its November 2020 launch, Sony has cut the PS5 price by £75 / €75, although some retailers are offering even bigger savings.

On PlayStation Direct in the UK, PS5’s price has been reduced from £479.99 to £404.99, with the offer valid until August 10.

However, the console can currently be purchased for £399.99 at retailers including Amazon, Argos and Currys, with the latter even including a copy of Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga.

Game is also selling PS5 consoles bundled with one game for £399.99. There are several titles to choose from, including Forspoken and Saints Row.

The price promotions vary slightly by country. For example, Sony’s official €75 discount in Germany is only available until August 7. It cuts the price of the console from €549.99 to €474.99, but Amazon is currently selling it for €459.99.

Sony is also expected to launch a temporary PS5 price cut in the US, which will reportedly see it knock $50 off the regular price of the console.

It may be attempting to clear stock of the console’s launch model ahead of unconfirmed plans to launch a new PS5 model featuring a detachable disc drive later this year.

Sony claimed on Thursday that PS5 sales have topped 40 million worldwide. PS4 remains the fastest-selling Sony console to reach the milestone, having hit 40 million sales two months quicker, but it didn’t face the same Covid-related supply issues that checked PS5’s momentum.

“We launched PlayStation 5 in November 2020 and the world was in a strange and different place than when we announced the console in 2019,” said SIE CEO Jim Ryan.

“Despite the unprecedented challenges of COVID, our teams and our partners worked diligently to deliver PS5 on time. We continued to face headwinds with the pandemic, and it took months for supply chains to normalize so we could have the inventory to keep up with demand.

“For more months than I care to remember, we kept thanking our community for their patience while working through these issues. But now PS5 supply is well-stocked and we are seeing that pent up demand finally being met.”
