Former CM Prithviraj Chavan gets death threat for demanding arrest of Bhide | Mumbai News

Pratishthan Hindustan founder and controversial Hindutva ideologue Sambhaji Bhide over his derogatory statements against Mahatma Gandhi, his mother and his lineage, Chavan received a death threat on his email, following which security has been beefed up at his residence in Karad city in western Maharashtra.

“An email was sent to him threatening with deadly consequences for speaking against Bhide. A police complaint has been filed with Karad city police station and the security too has been beefed up at his residence,” said Chavan’s office.

On Friday, Chavan had raised the issue of alleged derogatory comments about Mahatma Gandhi and his mother by Bhide, questioning the silence of the state government in the Assembly. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had announced that the state government will look into the matter.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who holds the home portfolio, too condemned the statement by Bhide. “Mahatma Gandhi is the father of the nation and he is viewed as the leader of India’s freedom struggle. People will not tolerate such a statement against him and appropriate steps will be taken by the state government as insulting Mahatma Gandhi will not be tolerated at all,” he said, while speaking to reporters in Nagpur.

Fadnavis, however, claimed that his party BJP has nothing to do with Bhide as he runs his independent organisation. “The politicisation of the controversy by the Congress is condemnable. The Congress workers should have hit the streets in a similar manner when Veer Savarkar was insulted,” he said.

Earlier, an FIR was registered under sections 153 A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language etc. and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) and 505-2 (making, publishing or circulating any statement, rumour or report) of the IPC at Rajapeth police station in Amravati against Bhide. His alleged remarks were made while addressing a gathering at Bharat Mangal Hall in Badnera Road area of Amravati on Thursday.

Former CM and Congress leader Ashok Chavan slammed Fadnavis over his comments. “While Fadnavis claims that the BJP has nothing to do with Bhide, its workers are protesting against our leader Yashomati Thakur for filing an FIR against Bhide. The government will clarify its view and present definite action against Bhide on Wednesday during the monsoon session of the legislature,” he said.
