Rahul Dravid defends Suryakumar Yadav’s poor ODI form, says he is still learning about 50-over format | Cricket News

Suryakumar Yadav has a scintillating start to his ODI career. The Mumbai batter has smashed tow fifties and four 30 plus totals in the first six ODIs, he has played for India. In those six ODIs, he has managed 261 runs, averaging 65. However, in the next 19 games, he has not able to double his total runs in the ODIs as he has managed only 215 runs. he has not hit a single fifty in the duration and has only 30 plus total.

With ODI World Cup getting closer and their still uncertainties about the injuries of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer, Surya’s form is a worrying sign for the team management.

Team India head coach Rahul Dravid has defended the 32-year-old saying he is still learning about the ODI cricket.

“I think Surya is a really good player. There is no doubt about it. His performances has shown that especially in T20 cricket and even in the domestic cricket. Unfortunately, I think he will be the first one to address that his ODI numbers probably not been upto his high standards that he has set in the T20, but he is also learning about ODI cricket,” Dravid told reporters after India’s six wickets loss against West Indies in the second ODI.

“He has played a lot of T20 cricket through the IPL and played a lot of competitive T20 cricket before he made his debut for India.

“In terms of one day cricket, he has probably not played that much of competitive cricket. You know because there in no IPL in one-day cricket.

“I think he is also learning about his game, learning how to bat through those middle overs. He is a talent and we want to give him as many opportunity as he can. It is really upto him now to take those opportunities and use those but in the kind of set up we are, we like to give people as many chances as we possibly can,” he added.

The final ODI of the three-match series is on Tuesday at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad. The teams are also scheduled to play five T20 matches, starting Friday.
