A Manipur Rifles jawan was killed in a fresh exchange of fire between security forces and armed individuals in Senjam Chirang, Imphal West district on Thursday.
The deceased has been identified as Tourangbam Rishikumar, 47, of Wangjing Lamding Mamang Leikai in Thoubal district. He had sustained a bullet injury in his head.
Police sources said two persons, including the jawan of 6 Manipur Rifles, sustained injuries in the heavy exchange of fire that occurred in the adjoining areas of Koutruk, Haraothel and Senjam Chirang early on Thursday morning. While the forces fought the armed individuals, the injured jawan succumbed at a private hospital in Imphal late in the evening.
Meanwhile, a mob stole arms and ammunition from the armoury of the 2nd India Reserve Battalion (IRB) and three police outposts in Bishnupur district, the police said. Officials are yet to determine the number of weapons and ammunition that were taken.
Security forces prevented a similar attempt at the 7 Manipur Rifles and 2 Manipur Rifles battalions and at a few police outposts in Imphal East district, the police said.
