The Bihar Chief Minister, Jagannath Mishra, whose future had been hanging fire for the past two weeks, has now been formally told to resign by next week. The AICC (I) general secretary, Rajiv Gandhi, announced that a successor to Jagannath would be elected at a meeting of the Congress (I) legislature party at Patna.
Protesting Sri Lanka
M Karunanidhi, DMK president and leader of the opposition in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, and K Anbazhagan, party general secretary, have resigned their membership of the House to protest against the “inaction of both the Central and Tamil Nadu governments on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue”. Karunanidhi said that other MPs, MLAs and MLCs have, however, been asked to continue to hold their offices.
NDA Chooses Leader
The newly-formed National Democratic Alliance will choose its leader at a joint meeting of the parliamentary parties of the Lok Dal and the BJP in a day or two. The Alliance has not yet decided how its office-bearers will be chosen but it does not envisage any problem in sorting this out. The proposed NDA coordination committee will work out the modalities of the functioning of the NDA in and out of Parliament.
SC On Hanging
The Supreme Court reserved judgment on the question of hanging by rope after hearing all parties before it. Several condemned prisoners, including the killers of Abhayankar in Pune and Vidya Jain in Delhi, have challenged the rope method as unconstitutional as it is “cruel and unusual”.
