‘Sleep-deprived’ truck driver crashes into another vehicle, 10 dead | Ahmedabad News

Ten people died and nine were injured on Friday at Bagodara near the Ahmedabad-Bagodara highway when a Tata SCV (small commercial vehicle) crashed into a stationary truck, said police. The driver of the mini-truck was sleep-deprived, as per the preliminary investigation.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the family of those who died in the accident. “The pilgrims (aboard the mini truck) were returning after darshan (visit) from the Chotila temple. They were crossing Surendranagar to reach the highway. On the highway, a truck with a punctured tyre was already parked. The Tata Ace SCV had three people in the front, and the rest at the back when it rammed the truck,” said Amit Vasava, Superintendent of Police, Ahmedabad Rural Police.

He also stated the pilgrims traveled the entire night and reached the shrine at 4.30 am on Friday. After a few hours, they were on the way back. “As per the preliminary investigation, the driver (of the SCV) was sleep-deprived as he was behind the wheel throughout the night. The vehicle, which crashed into the truck, was not a passenger vehicle. The post-mortem is taking place, and further investigation will follow,” the police officer added.

Of the nine injured, six were transferred to the Sola Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad, while others were admitted to Asarwa Hospital.
