Police couple to provide study material to 75 tribal children | India News

A police couple from Sironcha town in Maharashtra’s Maoist-affected Gadchiroli district celebrated Independence Day by distributing study material and sports equipment to 75 students from tribal villages in remote Sironcha taluka. They intend to continue to support the students over the next four years.

The couple, both police constables, grew up in poverty and said they wanted to mark Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav by helping the 75 tribal children.

Constables Nayeem Sheikh (36) and Rukhsar Sheikh (34), who are married to each other, have chosen the children from four villages that are far away from Sironcha town.

Nayeem Sheikh said that his father worked at a mosque and that his family had lived on alms until he joined the police force.

His wife also faced struggles, he said, adding: “Her father was a driver who died in an accident when she was very young. We both met after joining the force, and had a love-cum-arranged marriage.” Nayeem Sheikh said the children they were helping all came from poor families.

“We travelled to Marrigudam and Venlaya and provided these children with notebooks, pens, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, drawing books, sketch pencil boxes and sporting materials like cricket bats and balls, volleyballs, lagori games and skipping ropes,” he said.

The couple could not visit the villages of Jinganur and Amdeli because police personnel face threats from Maoists there. Instead, they sent the materials to the children through school teachers. Nayeem is also involved in anti-Maoist operations.
