The Gujarat government has commenced the construction of the Mahakali Vad Katharpur Complex in the Dehgam tehsil of Gandhinagar to develop the area as a tourist destination.
The complex comprises a 22-foot-deep underground meditation and yoga centre, said an official release Monday.
“According to folklore, this tree is 500 years old. Known as Mahakali Vad Kantharpur, this Vad (banyan tree) is also known as ‘mini Kabir vad’…Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his tenure as the Chief Minister, included this place in the list of tourist destinations in Gujarat in the year 2006,” the release stated.
It added that Modi visited the place on August 28, 2013, and resolved to successfully develop it as a religious tourism destination. “In May 2021, the Gujarat government made the Mahakali Vad Kantharpur development project more dynamic by allocating a budget of Rs 15 crore… On May 10, 2022, Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel visited the site and reviewed the project’s performance,” it added. The release stated special efforts are being made to develop the complex also as a spiritual centre. The release added special care is being taken to preserve the “ancient sanctity” of the tree.
