In a case of mistaken identity, a man was allegedly shot dead at his house in South Delhi’s Fatehpur Beri on Saturday by an assailant who also attacked his family members and friends. The police said the accused was later caught by the victim’s family and beaten up. He has been arrested.
The deceased has been identified as Rahul Kishan, 26, while the accused is Karan Singh, who also resides in the Fatehpur Beri area. Rahul’s brother Vickey, 24, was shot in the shoulder.
According to officers, Karan wanted to attack Rahul’s friend Sanjay, who owed him money, but he shot Rahul by mistake and later fought with everyone. The incident took place around 9.45 pm near the Fatehpur Beri temple. Local residents soon alerted the police that someone had fired bullets in the area and that a group was fighting on the street.
Chandan Chowdhary, Deputy Commissioner of Police (South), said, “We went to the area and found that a man named Rahul was shot at and was taken to a hospital. Meanwhile, the accused was found lying injured at the spot. Three live cartridges were recovered from him. He was later sent to the hospital.” Rahul was declared dead by doctors at the AIIMS Trauma Centre, the police found.

During the inquiry, the police said they found that Rahul, Vickey, their elder brother Jai and father Ram were sitting with a group of friends on their balcony. “Around 9.30 pm, Karan Singh came with a pistol and fired at Rahul and ran away. His family alleged that the accused did not see anyone, and so he killed Rahul. His father and brother chased Karan and managed to catch him outside their house,” the DCP said.
A fight then broke out during which the family managed to overpower Karan and snatch his pistol. They thrashed him, and took his pistol and bike so he could not escape, the police added. A crime team was sent to the spot and evidence was collected from the house and the streets.
Karan was also interrogated and he confessed to the crime saying he and his brother Jawahar had issues with another person named Sanjay and wanted to kill him, but he murdered Rahul instead. The police said Karan thought he was firing at Sanjay but he could not see properly in the dark.
