Two persons were killed and two others injured after a portion of a three-storey building at Nerul in Navi Mumbai collapsed on Wednesday night, said Rajesh Narvekar, commissioner of Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC).
According to NMMC’s disaster management cell, however, the official declaration of the toll would be made following a medical checkup being carried out at DY Patil Hospital.
It said that the incident was reported from Sarsole Sector 6 at around 9.11 pm on Wednesday.
According to civic officials, a large slab — floor of the hallway in the third-storey building — came crashing down on the first and second floors. While the building’s interior has turned entirely hollow, with the major part of the lower surface getting entirely crushed, the exterior of the building was intact, said officials.
Soon after the incident, NMMC’s disaster management cell deployed two fire engines and four ambulances for the rescue operation.
“Total four persons were admitted at DY Patil Hospital in Navi Mumbai, and a rescue operation is underway. There were residents on all the three floors, so we are checking if more people are trapped under the debris or not… Officials are trying to ascertain the reason behind the incident…,” said an official from NMMC’s disaster management cell.
