Kolhapur man held for duping cop of Rs 5 lakh on pretext of job for son | Mumbai News

A 38-year-old Kolhapur-based man was arrested in Mumbai on Saturday for allegedly duping a policeman of Rs 5 lakh under the pretext of getting a job for his son as junior engineer with the Indian Railways.

After trying to trace him for four years, police found him in Arthur Road jail, with the help of Union government’s Interoperable Criminal Justice System (ICJS).

According to personnel of Gamdevi police station, the arrested person identified as Prasad Kamble was also wanted in a case related to cheating a doctor in Nagpada of Rs 65 lakh.

The complainant in the present case is police constable Tanaji Mohite who came across Kamble while he was posted at DB Marg police station. “Kamble stayed close to his residence, so they got familiar with each other,” said an officer.

In November 2017, Kamble called the policeman to a restaurant in South Mumbai. During the conversation, he asked the policeman about his son. “When he told Kamble that his son, an engineering graduate, was looking for a job, he told the policeman that he knew people in the Mantralaya and in the Railways, and could help his son get employed as a junior engineer,” said an officer.

A few days later, Kamble contacted the policeman again and informed that it will take Rs 5 lakh to get his son employed, following which the police constable handed him a cheque of Rs 3 lakh and Rs 2 lakh cash on December 6, 2017.

“The accused then stopped contacting him and whenever the constable reached out to him, Kamble would give vague answers. Later he even blocked the complainant’s number… The constable also learned that Kamble had shifted residence, following which the complainant even went to his native place in Kolhapur to trace him,” an officer said.

In Kolhapur, the complainant was informed that the accused had duped several others under similar pretence following which he tried reaching out on his new numbers but in vain. The constable then lodged a complaint with Gamdevi police station.

According to police, Kamble and three accomplices took Rs 65 lakh from a doctor in Nagpada in 2017 under the pretext of getting his daughter a seat for MD course at KEM.

Inspector Dushyant Chavan of Gamdevi police station said, “We have been trying to arrest him since then… However, recently when we checked on the government’s ICJS portal, we came to know that he is lodged in Arthur Road jail.” He was in jail after being arrested by Wadala TT police early this month for duping some people from their jurisdiction.
