Metro Line-3 construction: Blasting work shatters Mantralaya windows | Mumbai News

Blasting work for the construction of underground Metro Line-3 led to shattering of several windows in Mantralaya, and damaged vehicles parked at the secretariat premises on Thursday.

The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) — responsible for implementing Metro Line-3 that will connect Colaba-Bandra-SEEPZ — has issued a statement, explaining how controlled blasting for the excavation of Mantralaya subway construction caused the damage.

“Excavation work of entry or exit of the Mantralaya subway is underway. Today, controlled blasting was carried out to break hard rocks. Blasting work has been underway for quite some time now, without issues. However, some windows of the Mantralaya got damaged during today’s operation,” said MMRC in a statement.

The MMRC has decided to review the project work, as it stopped controlled blasting work at the subway near the Mantralaya, it said, adding that the work would restart only after the causes are studied and corrective action is taken.

The Marine Drive police station, meanwhile, have filed a complaint against the construction company — L&T. Senior inspector Nilesh Bagul of Marine Drive police station said, “We have registered a case of negligence against the company, and will conduct a thorough investigation and arrest the person(s) responsible for the incident.”

The said project comprises the construction of a subway connecting the Mantralaya, Vidhan Bhavan, and new administrative buildings to the upcoming underground Metro-3 station near Nariman Point. The state home department had stalled the construction work of the subway over security reasons, which later began in December 2022, after obtaining necessary permissions.
