Through the Instagram story, she wrote, “My skin loves collagen…I’ve noticed firmness, closed pores…overall skin health…I drink it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.”

So, what is collagen? It is a vital protein found in our bodies that helps maintain the firmness and elasticity of our skin. Additionally, Dr Mandeep Singh, Head of Department, Plastic Surgery, Paras Health, Gurugram said, “There are various kinds of collagen, and each has a particular capability in the body. For instance, type I collagen is the most well-known type and is tracked down in skin, bones, and ligaments. Type II collagen is tracked down in ligaments, and type III collagen is tracked down in muscles and veins.”

However, as we age, our body’s natural collagen production decreases, which can lead to sagging skin, fine lines and wrinkles, making collagen supplements the only way we can replenish the essential protein.

Here are the benefits of collagen for skin:

Hydration

Collagen peptides have particular hydration structures, which boosts the natural moisturising factor (NMF) in your skin, giving the skin its smoothness and suppleness.

Improves skin elasticity

As you age, the skin becomes saggy due to depleting collagen levels. Collagen supports connective tissues in the body, allowing the skin to retain its elasticity.

Fights ageing

The decrease in collagen production as you age leads to dry skin and the formation of wrinkles, making collagen an effective anti-ageing ingredient.

Promotes wound healing

Collagen attracts fibroblasts to the wound site, which are the most common cells found in connective tissues. Thus, it has a great potential to stop bleeding, attract skin cells to the wound bed and stimulate formation of new blood vessels.

Adding to this, Dr Singh said, “Collagen is essential for maintaining the structural integrity of the body, promoting skin, bone, and joint health, aiding in muscle growth and repair, and supporting digestive health.”

However, he noted that collagen beverages ought not to be viewed as a substitute for a sound eating regimen and way of life. “Eating a diet plentiful in protein, nutrients, and minerals is fundamental for keeping the solid collagen levels up in the body,” he said.
