This comes a year after the Prime Ministers’ Museum was inaugurated at the Teen Murti complex which served as the official residence of India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. The name came into force last month.
The decision was taken at a special meeting of the NMML Society on June 15, presided over by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, who is the vice-president of the society. The NMML Society has Prime Minister Narendra Modi as its chairman, and Union Ministers Amit Shah, Nirmala Sitharaman, Dharmendra Pradhan, G Kishan Reddy, Anurag Thakur, among its 29 members.
The move spurred tensions between the Centre and Opposition parties, as the Congress and other parties slammed the move, calling it “petty” politics and an effort to dilute Jawaharlal Nehru’s legacy. Union ministers and the BJP however dismissed the allegation, and defended the move, saying it gives “respect” to all Prime Ministers till date.
