Man who threatened bomb blast during India-Pakistan World Cup match held in Gujarat’s Rajkot district | Ahmedabad News

The Ahmedabad city’s Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) has arrested a 29-year-old man from Rajkot district for sending an email threatening a bomb blast at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium during the cricket World Cup match between India and Pakistan scheduled on October 14.

The accused has been identified as Karan Mavi, a resident of Kherdi village in Rajkot district. Mavi, a native of Madhya Pradesh, lives along with his sister and brother and works as a farm labourer and carpenter, the police said.

Arrested Tuesday, Mavi has been booked for criminal intimidation under the provisions of the Indian Penal Code.

Police sources said Mavi is facing a rape complaint in Madhya Pradesh lodged by his wife. He has also spent around two years in jail for the same offence.

According to the DCB officials, the email was allegedly sent by Mavi from his id to the official email id of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on October 9.

The email’s subject read: ‘Hamara Kaam Hain (It is our job)’. The body read, “Is Baar Modi ke Gujrat stadium mein dhamaka hoga Sab log Satrk Rahe 14.10.2023 Yaad Rakhna Sab ki ruh kàp jayegi (This time there will be a blast at the Modi stadium in Gujarat. Be cautious on 14.10.2023; do remember that everyone will be shaken).”

Neeraj Badgujar, Joint Commissioner of Police, DCB said, “During the preliminary investigations, it came forth that the accused is a cricket enthusiast. The reason for the crime is noted to be the frustration from the case registered against him in Madhya Pradesh and the jail time he faced.”

He added that it seems the accused shot off the email to spread panic. Talking to The Indian Express, J H Sindhav, the investigating officer, said, “We have done a technical analysis of Mavi’s mobile and his past behaviour and so far, no serious criminal links or objectionable material has been found.”
