Double letter trouble for V-C of Visva-Bharati university | Kolkata News

A day after the Calcutta High Court directed the Visva-Bharati university to reinstate physics professor Manas Maity to the international CERN project from which he was removed last year, an association of the varsity’s professors has written a letter to Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan demanding removal of Vice-Chancellor Bidyut Chakrabarty.

In its letter to Pradhan, the Visva-Bharati University Faculty Association (VBUFA) also cited the observations made by Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay of the Calcutta High Court against the vice-chancellor on October 17.

“…Hon’ble Justice Abhijit Ganguly in his judgment not only administered justice to Professor Manas Maity but also made a significant observation regarding the holding of the position of Vice-Chancellor of Visva-Bharati by Prof. Bidyut Chakrabarty. The observation runs as follows: “I wonder how such a person can continue as vice-chancellor of a university who himself wants to damage the university’s beneficial attainments … I am of the view that this Bidyut Chakrabarty should be removed from the post of vice-chancellor of the university as he categorically wrote a letter to the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India for which not only the university would be deprived (and has been deprived till now) but also the interest of the country in the field of Science and Technology has been jeopardized,” the letter written by VBUFA secretary Kaushik Bhattacharya and dated October 18 read.

Accusing the vice-chancellor of acting against the interest of the country, the faculty association wrote: “The Hon’ble court held that Prof Chakrabarty has acted against the interest of the country which amounts to holding that he is involved in anti-national activities. The incident… has tarnished the image of Visva-Bharati before the national and international academia.”

Stating that Manas Maity, an “esteemed” physics professor, “played a significant role as a leading scientist in the prestigious international CERN project”, the association said that when Manas protested the confinement of English Department faculty members by the vice-chancellor in March 2021, he was “promptly removed” from his position and later suspended.

Festive offer

“Bidyut Chakrabarty wrote a letter to the Department of Science and Technology authority urging them to halt the prestigious project… In view of the observation of the Hon’ble High Court, we earnestly urge you to remove Bidyut Chakrabarty from the position of vice-chancellor of Visva-Bharati immediately and to initiate an investigation into his misdeeds and financial irregularities,” the faculty association wrote to the Union Minister.
