Ubisoft has delayed a ‘large game’, thought to be Star Wars Outlaws, to next fiscal year

Ubisoft says it has delayed a “large game” that it was previously planning to release by the end of March 2024.

The publisher noted the delay in its financial report for the first half of the fiscal year.

Although it didn’t specifically name the game, it’s generally believed that it is referring to Star Wars Outlaws, which was officially revealed earlier this year.

“The overperformance in Q2 and the current positive momentum of Ubisoft’s brands build confidence for the rest of the year,” Ubisoft’s statement reads.

“The Company can therefore confirm its announced guidance of strong top line growth and non-IFRS operating income of approximately €400
million, without releasing the other large game it had initially planned to launch during the last quarter of the current fiscal year.

“The Company has decided to launch this other large game in FY2024-25, so as to maximize its value creation.”

It was reported back in May, before Star Wars Outlaws was officially revealed, that Ubisoft was planning to release its open-world Star Wars game in early 2024.

Two sources told Kotaku that the game was scheduled for release during the company’s current fiscal year ending on March 31, 2024.

However, they also cautioned that the target was likely too ambitious, and said they expected the game’s release to ultimately be pushed to the following fiscal year ending in March 2025.

This would line up with Ubisoft’s new statement, if Star Wars Outlaws is indeed the game it is referring to.

Ubisoft has only ever officially given a ‘2024’ window for Outlaws, meaning a delay to next fiscal year could still achieve this.

“Experience the first-ever open world Star Wars game, set between the events of The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi”, Ubisoft’s description of the game says.

“Explore distinct planets across the galaxy, both iconic and new. Risk it all as Kay Vess, an emerging scoundrel seeking freedom and the means to start a new life, along with her companion Nix.

“Fight, steal, and outwit your way through the galaxy’s crime syndicates as you join the galaxy’s most wanted.”
