Former Uttar Pradesh minister and the BJP sitting MLA from the Lucknow (East) constituency Ashutosh Tandon passed away due to heart failure at a hospital in Lucknow on Thursday. He was 63.
“Honorable MLA and former minister of Uttar Pradesh Ashutosh Tandon passed away today at 12.07 pm due to heart failure,” Dr Rakesh Kapoor, medical director of Medanta Hospital, Lucknow, said in a statement.
Dr Kapoor said Tandon was suffering from illness for a long time and was being treated at the hospital. Son of veteran BJP leader and former Bihar governor Lalji Tandon, Ashutosh Tandon carried forward the legacy of his father. Popularly known as Gopalji in the UP political circle and his constituency, Tandon was a three-term MLA from the seat.
Tandon had won the Lucknow East constituency in the 2014 bypoll after the sitting MLA and veteran BJP leader Kalraj Mishra vacated it following his election to the Lok Sabha.
Tandon won the seat again in the 2017 Assembly elections, when the BJP formed a government in Uttar Pradesh under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and served as the Minister of Urban Development, Technical Education and Medical Education.
In the 2022 Assembly elections, he defeated Anurag Bhadoria of the Samajwadi Party by a margin of about 50,000 votes.
Tandon’s body was taken to the BJP state headquarters in Lucknow for leaders and people to pay final tributes before his body was consigned to flames.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath were among the prominent people who paid tribute to the departed leader and offered their condolences to the bereaved family.
In a post on X in Hindi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, the sitting MP from Lucknow, said, “I am deeply saddened by the demise of former UP Minister and Lucknow East MLA Ashutosh Tandon ‘Gopal ji’.” His political life was dedicated to the service of the people of Lucknow and he also played an important role in strengthening the party, he said and added that the work he did for the development of Lucknow and the state will always be remembered.
“In this hour of grief, I express my heartfelt condolences to his bereaved family. Om Shanti!” Singh said.
In a post on X in Hindi, Adityanath, who paid tribute to Tandon at his residence in Lucknow before his last rites, said, “The demise of Ashutosh Tandon ‘Gopal ji’ is unfortunate. He will always be remembered as a popular and hardworking politician.”
With Tandon’s death, the Lucknow (East) seat falls vacant again, necessitating a by-election.
