Cricket World Cup: When Virat Kohli, ‘wrong-footed inswinging menace’, got India a wicket | Cricket-world-cup News

Netherlands’ Scott Edwards joined an elite list of cricketers on Sunday when the Dutch cricket team played India in the final group stage match of the ongoing Cricket World Cup. Edwards lost his wicket to Virat Kohli, joining a group with illustrious names like Brendon McCullum, Quinton de Kock, Alastair Cook and Craig Kieswetter.

Kohli had scored a half century with the bat as India batted, but it is likely his most memorable contribution on the night would be the wicket of Edwards. Edwards lost his wicket in the 25th over of the Dutch innings as they were chasing a target of 411 runs.

Kohli was lucky with his wicket: the ball seemed to slip off his hands, landed short and outside the leg-stump of Edwards, who tried to glide the ball leg-side. But all he managed was a tickle that the anticipating wicket-keeper KL Rahul clung on smartly. Kohli could not believe that such a horrendous ball, to put it mildly, earned him a wicket. Nonetheless, he joyously celebrated. Cameras also caught sight of Kohli’s wife Anushka Sharma, who is in the stands, having a chuckle at the way the wicket fell. Skipper Rohit Sharma and the rest of the team also shared a laugh with Kohli in the middle.

Kohli bowled three overs, in which he gave away 13 runs.

Festive offer

With India already having sealed the top spot in the table ahead of the semi-finals, India skipper Rohit Sharma also tossed the ball to Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav, both of whom turned over their arms for two overs each.

At previous India games, fans at stadiums have been clamouring for Kohli to be handed the ball. India coach Rahul Dravid has also spoken of the prospect of Kohli being asked to bowl at a press conference when he was asked about Hardik Pandya’s injury robbing them of a sixth bowler.

“We don’t have the option to have a sixth proper bowler. But we have a wrong-footed inswinging menace whom we can go back for a few overs — he was close to doing in the last game with the crowd pushing him,” Dravid had said.

This was the first time Kohli has taken an international wicket after a match against he West Indies at the 2016 T20 WC. Kohli is a reluctant bowler these days, unlike in his age-group cricket days when he was considered a batting all-rounder.
