Anurag Kashyap reveals he slipped into depression, drank heavily, had two heart attacks after Netflix walked out of Maximum City: ‘I totally lost it’ | Bollywood News

Following the Tandav controversy, several web shows and films slated for release on various streaming platforms were either shelved or had to be reworked. Anurag Kashyap’s adaptation of Suketu Mehta’s Maximum City for Netflix was one such project. Just before entering pre-production, Netflix withdrew from the project, citing cautiousness amidst the country’s political climate.

In a recent interview with The Washington Post, Kashyap discussed the significance of Maximum City, calling it his best work and emphasising its importance. He expressed disappointment over the self-censorship adopted by streaming platforms post the Tandav controversy, referring to it as a form of “invisible censorship”.

Speaking about Maximum City, the filmmaker said, “It was my best work. I’ve never done such honest, important work.” Kashyap revealed that Netflix’s departure from Maximum City lacked specific reasoning. He speculated that either the content he’d penned was sensitive or he had become a sensitive figure for the streaming platform.

Anurag Kashyap shared the toll this incident took on him, admitting to falling into a prolonged state of depression and seeking solace in alcohol. He also shared that this was the time he suffered two heart attacks. The director said, “Maximum City was where all my energy went. I was heartbroken. I totally lost it.”

Reflecting on streaming platforms, Kashyap expressed disappointment, as he viewed this space as a potential revolution that fell short of expectations. He said, “Streaming was finally the space I was waiting for. The disappointment is it was supposed to be a revolution, but it was not. Like social media, it was supposed to empower people, but it became a tool.”
