UP naib tehsildar arrested for rape, murder bid on woman official | Lucknow News

A naib tehsildar facing charges of attempt to rape and murder a woman colleague from the Revenue Department in Uttar Pradesh’s Basti district was arrested more than a week after he remained absconding, police said on Monday.

An FIR was registered against Ghanshyam Shukla (40) on November 17 under Sections 376 (rape), 307 (attempt to murder), 452 (house trespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restrain), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intend to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code.

The complainant had alleged that on November 12 evening, Shukla came to her house and broke open the rear door to gain entry inside. She alleged that he tore her clothes and attempted to rape her besides abusing and assaulting her.

The medical examination of the complainant was conducted and her statement was recorded before a magistrate. Also, a reward of Rs 25,000 was announced on Shukla after the police obtained a non-bailable warrant against him from a local court.

The police had on Saturday arrested Shukla’s sister, father-in-law, and brother-in-law for allegedly sheltering and helping him escape. The three got bail from the court the same day.

Festive offer

The accused has been suspended and attached with the Kanpur Divisional Commissioner’s office on the basis of a preliminary inquiry report sent to the state government by the Basti District Magistrate on November 19.

A committee comprising three women officials from the district administration had conducted the preliminary inquiry into the allegations levelled by the complainant.

The committee had summoned the complainant and Shukla to record their statements after it was formed on November 16. Though Shukla recorded his statement and refuted the allegations, the complainant did not appear to give her testimony, sources said. The committee submitted its report stating that a detailed investigation was required into the matter.

Earlier on Sunday, the complainant met Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Gorakhpur seeking an immediate arrest of the accused. The CM assured her of action and told her to follow the service norms, sources said.
